Brackishwater aquaculture is a prospective area for sustainable development of the fisheries sector and aqua-farmers in the Union Territory of Puducherry. In this regard, ICAR CIBA Chennai is joining hands with the State Department of Fisheries, Puducherry in the Blue Revolution Scheme through a project entitled “Implementation of Cage Culture Programme in brackishwater area of UT of Puducherry”. The startup process for this commenced on 21st July 2017 by the visit of Shri.P.Parthiban IAS, Secretary Fisheries Government of Puducherry and Director of Fisheries, Government of Puducherry and his technical team comprising of Shri.V.Jayanand, Joint Director of Fisheries, Shri.J.Nadarajan, Deputy Director of Fisheries and other officials to Muttukadu Experimental Station of CIBA and subsequent interactions with scientists at CIBA HQ, Chennai.

Dr.K.K.Vijayan, Director, CIBA Chennai welcomed the team led by Shri.P.Parthiban IAS and explained in brief about the prospects of the brackishwater aquaculture sector in India and Puducherry. Later, the team had detailed interaction with the Director and scientists from CIBA regarding hatchery production and farming of finfishes, shrimp and crab.

Later on, during their visit to CIBA Headquarters, Director CIBA depicted the road map for sustainable development of aquaculture in the Union Territory of Puducherry and emphasized the importance of convergence between CIBA and the State Government for implementation of schemes in brackishwater aquaculture on Public Private Partnership mode.

Dr.C.V.Sairam, Acting SIC, Social Science Division and Dr.R.Saraswathy, Principal Scientist AAHED took the team to the cage farming unit of CIBA at the renovated Adyar estuary involving the nearby fishermen village, Srinivasapuram.

At the end, Shri.P.Parthiban IAS in his concluding remarks profusely thanked Director CIBA Chennai and the scientists for taking immense interest on their visit, which has enlightened them on various spheres of brackishwater aquaculture and he wished to have long term technical guidance from CIBA Chennai through convergence in the Blue Revolution Scheme to be implemented in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The visit concluded with the Vote of Thanks by the Acting SIC, Social Science Division.
