ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), Chennai signed a MOU with the Aquaculture Development Cooperative Society (ADCOS), Payyanur, Kerala on the 25th March, 2019 to train the aqua farmers of the ADCOS and dissemination of CIBA technologies suitable for the agro-climatic situation of the west coast. Under the agreement CIBA will partner with the farmers group to provide technical guidance for the adoption of brackishwater technologies suitable for the region. Dr. K. K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA, who executed the MOU for ICAR-CIBA, has emphasized the need of farmer participation in increasing the aquaculture production. He cited the possibilities in the nursery rearing of seabass in Kerala by the agencies like ADCOS, for the production of stockable size seabass fingerlings to promote cage aquaculture in that region. He further emphasized the importance of farmers participation in promoting brackishwater aquaculture using the novel technologies developed in the institutions such as CIBA, on a benefit sharing mode. Shri. T. Purushothaman, the president, ADCOS who executed the MOU for ADCOS stated that the ADCOS plays a vital role in adopting aquaculture as a livelihood activity and expressed his society’s interest in partnering with CIBA for the development of brackishwater aquaculture in the west coast with a focus on Kerala.
