National Farmers Day (Kisan Diwas) is celebrated every year on 23rd December in honour of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. Kakdwip Research Centre (KRC) of ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) observed Kisan Diwas on 23rd December 2022 at the recently inaugurated fish waste processing facility at KRC Campus. About 80 farmers, including members of self-help group, students, scientists and staff of KRC of CIBA participated in the programme. As part of the event awareness on converting fish waste to wealth and sharing of experience by the firm who adopted CIBA waste-to-wealth technology: PlanktonPlus were organised.
Dr. T.K.Ghoshal, Principal Scientist, KRC of CIBA highlighted the significance of National Farmers Day and also emphasized the importance of cleanliness for the development of the nation. He also highlighted the importance of recycling of fish and domestic waste to avoid infections and diseases. Mr. Biswajit Samanta, from M/s. TK enterprises to whom the Planktonplus technology was transferred, shared their experience on the production and performance of Planktonplus in shrimp and fish culture and also their marketing potential. He pointed out that the farmers who are using PlanktonPlus are satisfied with the product and are of the opinion that the use of the product reduces the cost of production by reducing the feed input.
CIBA scientists demonstrated to the participants about the protocol for recycling of fish wastes to value added products and their usage in commercial aquaculture and agriculture. The valued added products, Planktonplus and HoriPlus were distributed to self-help group members. The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. N.S Sudheer, Scientist, KRC of CIBA.
