The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW-2022) was observed at the ICAR-CIBA during 18 to 24th November, 2022. The Indian Network for Fisheries and Animal’s Antimicrobial Resistance (INFAAR) team of ICAR-CIBA has coordinated the programme by incorporating a number of initiatives to increase awareness among the staff and students.
Dr. Gaurav Rathore, Project Investigator for INFAAR and Head of the Division, Aquatic Animal Health and Exotics, National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Luck now, delivered a special talk on ‘Indian Network for Fishery and Animal’s Antimicrobial Resistance’ that was quite insightful about the state of Indian research on antimicrobial resistance. He particularly mentioned that in order to reduce the healthcare failures brought by the rising antimicrobial resistance, regulations and policies on the use of antibiotics should be carefully considered and reviewed.
On this occasion, several competitions were arranged among the staff and research scholars to raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance and the winners of these competitions received cash prizes and certificates.
Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA, expressed the need for judicious use of antibiotics, awareness of the public to safeguard against drug resistance of clinical pathogens, and the spread of these pathogens in the environment during his valedictory remarks. On research front mapping of AMR and data, as done in INFAAR, is very important and at the same time it is important to understand the pathways leading to AMR. He also urged improvements in the handling of clinically relevant drugs and their proper disposal.
