ICAR-CIBA Chennai, under the auspices of Society of Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries (SCAFI) conducts monthly online lecture series under the banner “Aquaculture without borders” delivered by fisheries and aquaculture experts from different countries. As a part of this, Dr. Kuperan Viswanathan, Professor, Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business, University of Utara Malaysia, delivered a special lecture on “Aquaculture Development in Southeast Asia- the science and the economics” on 16th December 2022.
Prof. Viswanathan outlined the history of aquaculture development in South East Asian countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region during the last half a century. He also discussed the greener areas of aquaculture for rapid economic development of the ASEAN member countries also along with few localized grey areas due to externalities happened alongside. He presented data on economics of aquaculture of major species cultured in the region. He concluded the talk with future directions for responsible development of aquaculture in the ASEAN region. He interacted online with the CIBA scientists and scholars and answered their queries and comments.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Chennai highlighted the importance of infusion of economics into the customization of aquaculture technologies for the localized needs of farmers of different regions learning from experience of other countries. Dr.C.V.Sairam, SIC, Social Sciences Division welcomed the gathering. Dr.T.Ravisankar, Secretary, SCAFI introduced the speaker and Dr. K. Ambasankar, Treasurer, SCAFI proposed the Vote of Thanks.
