World Environment day was celebrated at ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai to emphasize the need to protect the environment. The theme of the World Environment Day, 2019 was “Beat the Air Pollution”. In his presidential address, Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA, underlined the initiative taken by ICAR-CIBA viz. banning of plastic use in the institute premises, greening of campus with planting trees and converting fish waste into wealth with community participation. Dr. P. Saiprasad, Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai was the chief guest and he spoke about the ill-effects of air pollution on human health and the measures taken by the government to combat it. In his presentation, he mentioned about the alarming role of Green House Gases (GHG) in polluting the air in India vis-à-vis the other countries. As part of the celebrations, essay and impromptu elocution competitions were held for the college students to encourage them to express their innovative ideas and opinions on environment protection. The chief guest awarded the certificates and prizes to the winners. Dr. M. Muralidhar, Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge, Environment Section in his welcome address briefed about the origin of world environment day and its significance in the present day context. Dr. Alavandi, Head AAHED in his felicitation address highlighted about the influence of environment on animal health. Dr. S. Suvana, Scientist, Environment Section proposed the vote of thanks.
