Dr. M. Kailasam is a Principal Scientist and Head, Fish Culture Division at ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture Chennai. He earned M. Sc. and M.Phil. degrees in Zoology during 1988 and 1990, respectively from Bharathidasan University Tiruchirappalli and Ph.D. degree in Marine Sciences from CMFRI, Cochin University of Science & Technology during 1997 by obtaining ICAR-SRF fellowship from 1989-1993. After joining ICAR-CIBA Chennai in 1994, he has taken up research programmes to develop comprehensive technology packages for seed production and farming of candidate brackishwater finfish species. He played a significant role for achieving first breakthrough onthe breeding of various candidate finfish species such as milkfish, grey mullet, mangrove red snapper, spotted scat and silver moony. He has vast experience in popularising seabass and milkfish farming in India with farmer’s participation in several coastal states through consultancy and externally funded projects mode. Dr. Kailasam obtained DBT overseas Associateship, Govt. of India and worked in the University of Tokyo, Japan and also attended various international training programmes in reputed institutions in different countries such as Philippines, Indonesia and France. He has generated financial resources tune of Rs.10 crores as PI and co-PI of various externally funded research projects from thefunding agencies such as World Bank, Indo-French collaboration, NFDB, NAIP, DBT, Mangrove cell, Govt. of Maharashtra and ICAR-AP Cess. Dr. Kailasam also acted as Officer-in-Charge, Muttukkadu Experimental Station of CIBA and involved in the institution building and infrastructure development of the centre during 2013-2019.
