Dr.M.Jayanthi is a Principal Scientist at ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture. She is leading research programmes on geospatial planning of aquaculture and studies on aquaculture impact assessment. Her work focuses on geospatial technology for sustainable management of coastal resources, particularly site selection, impact assessment, and climate change adaptations. She earned a Master of Engineering in Agriculture from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University 1993, and a Doctorate in Civil engineering at Anna University in 2001 titled “Environmental Impact of Aquaculture on the Pichavaram Mangroves using Remote sensing and GIS”. She has joined Indian Agricultural Research Service in 1993, a first women Agricultural Engineering scientist in ICAR. She has generated financial resources to the tune of over Rs. 200.31 lakhs as Principal Investigator through external grants.
- Geospatial planning for aquaculture adhering to environmental laws and site-specific resource characteristics
- Optimization of energy use for the conservation and reduction of shrimp production cost
- Assessment of the impact of aquaculture on ecologically important coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, lakes, etc. using RS and GIS
