ICAR-CIBA has developed a Super-Intensive Precision Shrimp Farming Technology (SIPS) integrating its cutting-edge technologies and multidisciplinary approach. It is a HDPE lined circular tanks based production system with a central nursery and state of the art energy dispensation modes with an integrated waste water management system. Farmers can plan their crop cycle in-tune with market requirements in terms of shrimp size and volume. This new age shrimp production system is expected to achieve a ‘revolution’ in the shrimp farming sector.

This system can produce 100-120 tonnes of shrimp per hectare per annum in t  hree crop cycles (100 days/cycle) i.e more shrimp from less space with lesser critical inputs like feed and energy. This farming innovation promises higher productivity, reduced production costs, and lower risks, transforming Indian shrimp farming into a truly sustainable industry. Through enhanced inputs efficiency and water quality management the system can save the energy cost up to 30% with a Feed Conversion Ratio of 1.1, weekly average growth of 2.6 g, less cost of production of Rs.175 per kg with an assured profit of Rs.100 per kg for 20 g size shrimp in 90 days of crop duration.

This innovative shrimp production technology developed by CIBA is being demonstrated for its techno-economic feasibility with the financial support of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)’ of the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India fulfilling its main motto of ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’ the Fisheries Sector with a production goal of two million tonnes of shrimp and an export value amounting ₹ one lakh crores by 2025.

Shri. George Kurian, Honourable Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Minority Affairs, Government of India has witnessed the 8th consecutive harvest of this new age shrimp production system as Chief Guest alongwith Shri. Venkata Swami, IAS, Chairman, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Dr.J.K.Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR, Dr. B.K.Behra The Chief Executive, NFDB, Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA), DoF and representatives of shrimp industry from the maritime states at CIBA’s Muttukadu Experimental Station. The Honurable Minister invited the shrimp farming industry to adopt and scale up this new shrimp production system which has the potential to put the Indian shrimp farming in right trajectory.

Dr.J.K. Jena, DDG (Fy), ICAR underlined that customization of this technology for different locations is the key for its up-scaling. The Chairman, MPEDA asserted that MPEDA can pilot this model in different states with the farming sector industry. Similarly, The Chief Executive, NFDB assured funding support for popularising this model through exposure visits of farmers from the maritime states.

Three MoUs were singed with CIBA in the presence of the Hon’ble Minister for transfer of this Super-Intensive Precision Shrimp Farming Technology for further validation was singed during the occasion with M/s.Waterbase Pvt Ltd., Chennai and M/s. Prasidhi Exports Pvt Ltd, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. The other MoU was signed for the sustainable integration of seaweeds in shrimp aquaculture for enhancing growth, environmental health and seed bank development with Ms.TSC Purple Pvt. Ltd., Gujarat. In addition to this new shrimp production model, the Honourable Minister has also launched a parametric shrimp crop insurance product developed by the Ms.Digisafe Insurance Ltd., with the technical support of ICAR-CIBA.
