ICAR-CIBA is undertaking fisheries based livelihood development interventions for the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe families in Pulicat region of Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. As part of it, three days training cum exposure visit was conducted during 27th – 29th December 2023 for 25 SC and ST beneficiaries from Kattur colony, Kattur laximipuram and Senjiamman villages in Tiruvallur district Tamil Nadu.
The beneficiaries were given hands on training on fish farming, crab farming, fish feed development at fish and crab hatcheries and feed mill at MES of CIBA. In addition they were sensitized on crop insurance, fish waste processing techniques, disease management and livelihood opportunities for their upliftment. Second day an exposure visit was arranged for the trainees to see “Hapa based seabass nursery rearing, seabass fish farming [in cage] at Kottaikadu, Chengalpattu district and Periyar mud crab hatchery at Mugaiyur, Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Eraniyappan, Proprietor, Periyar mud crab hatchery explained them on mud crab [crablets] rearing.
During the concluding session farm inputs like fish nets, tarpaulin sheets, fish fingerlings and fish feed were distributed along with training certificates by Dr. M. Kailasam, PS & HOD, Director I/C, CIBA to the trainees. A training manual in Tamil Language was also handed over to the trainees as reference material. He interacted with SC & ST beneficiaries and appreciated their sincere efforts and interest shown in participating in this programme. Dr. B. Shanthi, Principal Scientist & PI , STC – SCSP Scheme (Pulicat Region), Dr. P. Mahalaskhimi Principal Scientist & Nodal officer, CIBA- STC & SCSP Scheme, Social Sciences Division (SSD), Dr. Vidya Rajendran, Senior Scientist, AAHED and Mr. Shri.N. Jagan Mohan Raj, Technical Officer jointly conducted the programme.
