ICAR-CIBA and its professional forum, the Society of Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries (SCAFi) jointly organized a monthly lecture series entitled “Aquaculture without borders” to sensitize CIBA Scientists and SCAFi members about the current status of aquaculture in other aquaculturally active countries. In the series, Dr. Marcy N. Wilder, Project Leader in the Fisheries Division of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) and Professor in the Department of Global Agricultural Sciences, the University of Tokyo, Japan delivered a lecture on ‘Status of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Japan’ on 1-9-2022 in a meeting conducted in hybrid mode. About 95 Scientists and scholars participated in the session. Dr. Marcy highlighted that out of 2.2 lakh tones of shrimp consumption in Japan about 15 per cent was imported from India. In Japan domestic production of shrimp was only 1,500 tones per year mostly from their native species the Kuruma shrimp. She gave the details of new aquaculture technologies like Recirculatory Aquaculture System with circular tanks and ‘Indoor Shrimp Production System” (ISPS) which is in operation in Niigata Prefecture for over 10 years. It utilizes 2 pools of 600 tones of water each, produce up to 8 crops of shrimp per year and without any impact to the environment. She also explained about new maturation technology developed for shrimps in Japan. She addressed queries on importance of reducing fish meal in shrimp feeds, sea ranching for stock augmentation and aeration systems. Earlier, Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA welcomed the speaker and highlighted the avenues for collaboration between ICAR and JIRCAS. Dr. T. Ravisankar, Secretary and Dr. K. Ambasankar, Treasurer, SCAFi coordinated the meeting.
