ICAR-CIBA organized an awareness program on biosafety in laboratories on 13th December, 2022. During the event Dr. K.G. Tirumurugaan, Project Director I/C, Translational Research Platform for Veterinary Biologicals, TANUVAS, Chennai delivered a talk on ‘Biosafety in Laboratories’. The program was live-streamed online through YouTube channel. The program was attended by scientists, technical staff and students of ICAR-CIBA and other fisheries institutes. Dr. Tirumurugaan, during his presentation, explained the process of getting approval of regulatory bodies for research projects involving virulent pathogens, recombinant and transgenic organisms. He also explained the biosafety procedures to be adopted in biological laboratories and answered the queries from the audience. Earlier, the Director, Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, who attended the meeting online, called for the implementation of biosafety protocols in the laboratories. Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Scientist In-Charge during his introductory remarks stressed that personal safety is also equally important as that of environmental safety. Dr. Shashi Shekhar, Chairman, IBSC, mentioned that the students need to be aware of the safety protocols in the laboratory. The program was coordinated by Dr. M. Makesh, Member Secretary, Institutional Biosafety Committee.
