ICAR-CIBA through its societal arm, the Society of Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries (SCAFi) conducts special lecture series under the theme “Aquaculture without borders” delivered by fisheries/aquaculture experts from other countries. As part of the series, Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, Professor, Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh delivered an on-line lecture on “Aquaculture in Bangladesh” on September 14, 2022.
Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA and President, SCAFi welcomed the speaker and gave a brief comparison of Indian and Bangladesh aquaculture situation at present. Dr. Salam presented an overview of aquaculture systems and candidate species currently in practice in Bangladesh. He also highlighted about the latest technologies like Recirculatory Aquaculture System, Bio-floc and Hydroponics systems introduced in Bangladesh and their performance along with constraints. While Hilsa fish production has been increasing, shrimp production is stagnant in the last decade due to diseases and other issues he stated. Pangasius and tilapia fish species contribute about half of the fish production in Bangladesh.
Later, the speaker clarified the queries on management of mangrove-aquaculture conflict, efforts on species diversification and Specific Pathogen Free tiger shrimp culture in Bangladesh. Dr. T. Ravisankar, Secretary, SCAFi welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker and Dr. Akshaya Panigrahi, Vice President, SCAFi proposed the vote of thanks.
