ICAR-CIBA conducted a fishers’ interaction cum demonstration programme on cage aquaculture of brackishwater fishes as part of the National Campaign on ‘Non-Conventional Aquaculture Systems’ at Thonirevu village, Pulicat, Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu on 23.07.2022 under the SCSP scheme. About 56 fisherfolk beneficiaries attended the programme. Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA outlined the technologies developed by ICAR-CIBA especially for the livelihood cum societal development. He supplied mangrove red snapper juvenile fishes (60-120 g) to the beneficiaries and stocked them in FRP-HDPE hybrid cages deployed for cage aquaculture for the benefit of SCSP beneficiaries. Thiru. K. Sampath, President, Kottaikkuppam Panchayat, other beneficiaries thanked ICAR-CIBA for demonstrating cage aquaculture for livelihood development of villagers and assured their whole hearted support for the success of the interventions. Dr. B. Shanthi, Principal Scientist highlighted the livelihood development activities undertaken in the neighborhood villages adopting CIBA technologies. Dr. T. Senthil Murugan, Principal Scientist & Coordinator of demonstration programme explained about the importance of cage culture of brackishwater fin fishes. Dr. T. Bhuvaneswari, Senior Scientist & Nodal Officer (SCSP scheme) welcomed the gathering and briefed about the scheme activities of ICAR-CIBA. Dr. R. Ananda Raja, Dr. R. Geetha, Senior Scientists and Shri. Dani Thomas, Scientist briefed about the health aspects of fishes, economic viability of non-conventional aquaculture systems and fish culture practices, respectively. Thiru. D. Rajababu, CTO and Thiru. C. Saravanan, SSS executed the stocking activities in cages with the participation of beneficiaries.
