Kakdwip Research Centre of ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (KRC of ICAR-CIBA), Kakdwip, West Bengal conducted a hands-on training program on “Disease management of brackishwater aquaculture” during December 9-14, 2024. The training programme was specially conducted for the officers of Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat on different aspects of diseases of brackishwater aquaculture systems and their appropriate management. The training programme was attended by five officers of Government of Gujarat and one progressive shrimp farmer of West Bengal. Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director, ICAR- CIBA, in his foreward note emphasised the importance of conducting such type of training programme for the fisheries extension officials of the state governments as they are the key personnel in disseminating this information among the farmers. A training manual on ‘Disease management in brackishwater aquaculture’ was prepared and gave to the participant as a reference material.
The training program included both theory and practical sessions that covered a variety of topics, including diagnosis of diseases in brackishwater shrimp, crab and finfish; farm biosecurity measures, monitoring of soil and water quality parameters; feed management strategies for disease prevention and appropriate preventive measures for various aquatic animal diseases. Additionally, the course curriculum encompassed the implementation of various probiotics and zero-water exchange-based culture techniques. The trainees were provided with practical experiences on isolation and identification of significant bacteria, molecular detection of shrimp viral pathogens, and sampling and preservation techniques for both finfish and shellfish samples. Trainees were also provided with an orientation regarding the various ongoing activities of the KRC of ICAR-CIBA. The training programme concluded by means of a brief valedictory ceremony on 14th December, 2024. Dr. Debasis De, Head, Kakdwip Research Centre of ICAR-CIBA was the convener and Dr. Sanjoy Das and Dr. N.S. Sudheer were the coordinators of the training programme.
