ICAR-CIBA celebrated the World Fisheries Day-2022 on 21.11.2022 at Keelarkollai village, Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu with 218 fishers, fish farmers and farm women who are mentored by ICAR-CIBA in adopting aquaculture based livelihood models. The objective is to create awareness on conservation of fisheries resources and protection of coastal environment through community participation. During the event, Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Principal Scientist and Director In-Charge gave an insight in to current year theme ‘Awareness on importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries’. Dr. D. Deboral Vimala, Principal Scientist, Social Sciences Division and coordinator of the event in her address elaborated about the importance of observing world fisheries day and initiatives of ICAR-CIBA on sustainable fisheries. Dr. C.P. Balasubramanian, Principal Scientist, Crustacean Culture Division, highlighted the importance and conservation of fishes and their role in production and nutritional security to rural population. Dr. M. Kailasam, Principal Scientist, Scientist-in-Charge, Fish Culture Division expressed the importance of CIBA livelihood models and highlighted the conservation efforts required in open water fishing practices. Dr. N. Lalitha, Senior Scientist shared her view on various threats to the soil and water in the coastal environment.
